WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Feb. 13, 2012 -- Several Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) facilities have been honored again by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery as Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) winners.
The WRAP was established in 1993 by the California Integrated Waste Management Board to recognize California businesses for exemplary efforts to reduce waste such as paper, cardboard and other recyclable products, which might otherwise go to landfills.
Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sites in El Segundo, Palmdale, and Redondo Beach, Calif., were recognized by the WRAP for accomplishments such as the following:
- Collectively the three sites recycle approximately one million pounds of material annually, especially white paper and metal.
- The El Segundo facility, an award winner for the 14 th consecutive year, has donated significant amounts of surplus office supplies to 10 local schools during the past three years. The equivalent donation of new equipment would total approximately $4,000 per school.
- The Palmdale location initiated a new commingled-recycling program to increase the amount of materials it resells, reuses and recycles, thus diverting more waste from landfills.
- The Redondo Beach site partners with Los Angeles County to host an annual "household hazardous waste roundup" for employees and the community.
Additionally, Northrop Grumman's Navigation Systems Division (NSD) in Woodland Hills was honored for the sixth consecutive year for its comprehensive waste reduction and recycling initiatives. NSD recovers 100 percent of nearly seven tons of green waste each month, reusing it as compost at its 58-acre facility and sending the remainder to a local waste management company. The site also recycled approximately 101 tons of construction waste and 657 tons of solid waste in 2010, representing a 70 percent waste diversion rate.
"Northrop Grumman recognizes the importance of minimizing the company's environmental impact," said Tom McCabe, corporate director of Environmental, Health and Safety for Northrop Grumman. "We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen by actively promoting a variety of waste reduction and recycling programs."
