LINTHICUM, Md., May 12, 2010 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Electronic Systems sector has been honored as this year's recipient of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce's Excellence in Educational Partnerships Award for large businesses.
In ceremonies at the Chamber's annual awards recognition dinner on April 22 at the BWI Airport Marriott Hotel, Joseph C. Striedl, an engineering manager at the company's Linthicum campus, accepted the award. It recognized the company's educational outreach efforts at Meade High School over the past decade that focused on encouraging students to consider science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educational and career pursuits.
Striedl has personally spearheaded the company's volunteer educational outreach activities at the high school over the past ten years. He first became involved at the school as part of the Discover "E" program, a national campaign focused on communicating with students about the myriad career opportunities available to those who pursue engineering-related courses of study.
He later helped introduce the Project Lead the Way curriculum at Meade High School and most recently he became a member of the high school's new Homeland Security Signature Program's Integrated Community Stakeholders Team. In this capacity, he has helped arrange for engineers at Northrop Grumman to visit the school to talk with students about homeland security-related career opportunities.
Northrop Grumman was nominated for the award by Bill Sheppard, Homeland Security Signature Program Facilitator at Meade High School, who singled out Striedl for "his unwavering association with helping the students of Meade High School. It is only through the efforts of volunteers like him that Meade has been able to make such a leap in its academic achievements."
