HOLLYWOOD, Md., May 5, 2010 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), has continued its support of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program at St. Mary's County Public Schools, with a $5,000 sponsorship.

The $5,000 sponsorship will support STEM program participation of more than 250 students, elementary through high school, as well as numerous other students across the school system who benefit from STEM instruction in extended day programs and summer camps.

STEM emphasizes the core areas of mathematics and science with an infusion of technology and engineering. Students with advanced skills and interests in these areas of study receive instruction in state-of-the-art classrooms, research laboratories, and e-learning labs.

"As a corporation recognized for its technological innovation, Northrop Grumman is committed to supporting the communities where its employees live and work," said Scott Stewart, Northrop Grumman corporate lead executive in Patuxent River, Md. "We are proud to support initiatives, like the STEM program, that help prepare the scientists, engineers and mathematicians of the future."

Dr. Michael Martirano, superintendent of schools, said, "We celebrate the fact that we have such wonderful business partnerships with companies like Northrop Grumman, here in St. Mary's County. Through both their financial support and their active involvement with our STEM students, they demonstrate that they truly care about education and building a strong, future workforce."

As part of 2010 National Engineers Week, employees from the Hollywood, Md. office shared their "bridge-building" skills with the "STEM 10" students at Great Mills High School. The students, who built "bridges" out of balsa wood and glue, presented their design concepts to the Northrop Grumman employees before the bridges were put to the test to see which one would hold the most weight. The winning design held an impressive 56 pounds.

"We are truly building a bridge with our community," said Mike Kibler, Northrop Grumman STEM Coordinator for the Patuxent River area. "It is very rewarding to see the innovation young people can employ when they are given the tools and realize it can be fun too!"
