Northrop Grumman rigger Albert McCoy assists in mounting the MK46 Mod 1 weapon system onboard USS San Antonio, the lead ship in the U.S. Navy's new LPD 17 class of amphibious transport dock ships built by the company's Ship Systems sector. The ship has been delivered and is undergoing final preparations before departing for her commissioning ceremony, scheduled for Jan. 14, 2006 in Ingleside, Texas. Northrop Grumman Ship Systems currently has four more LPDs in production at its Pascagoula and New Orleans facilities.

The MK46 Mod 1 is a remotely operated naval gun system using a 30mm high-velocity cannon and second-generation thermal day-night sight for close-in ship's protection. Built by General Dynamics, MK46 Mod 1 is the naval derivative of the turret originally developed for the U.S. Marine Corps' Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle.
