REDONDO BEACH, Calif., May 17, 2011 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been honored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) for the lowest employee injury and illness rates in the aircraft manufacturing sector for 2010 as well as its exemplary safety programs and practices.

The AIA Worker Safety Excellence Awards were established in 2005 to highlight successful worker health and safety programs guided by management commitment at the highest level. AIA is the nation's premier trade association representing major aerospace and defense companies and their suppliers.

This year's awards were presented May 4, 2011, at the AIA Environment, Health and Safety Committee's Conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

"We are extremely proud to be recognized for our commitment to employee safety," said Gary W. Ervin, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "We've worked hard to establish a 'safety culture' based on the belief that employees are our most valuable asset."

Northrop Grumman maintains that culture in several ways. It starts by making safety awareness a priority for management at all levels, with safety included in individual performance goals tied to compensation. Workplace metrics are reviewed on a regular basis to measure progress.

Awareness extends to the entire work force through employee communications and "safety committees" that regularly review injuries, trends and opportunities for improvement. Employees who make suggestions or implement projects that improve safety are recognized with non-monetary awards.

Northrop Grumman's attention to workplace safety has resulted in a 41 percent decrease in injuries in its aircraft operations between 2005-2010, which translates into cost savings such as reduced insurance premiums and fewer lost workdays.

Northrop Grumman's principal aircraft operations are in California (El Segundo, Mojave, Palmdale and San Diego), Florida (Melbourne and St. Augustine), Mississippi (Moss Point), New York (Bethpage) and North Dakota (New Town).

Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide. Please visit www.northropgrumman.com for more information.
