ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., June 20, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected to provide its Laser Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) system for the U.S. Marine Corps' (USMC) CH-46E helicopters.
This is the second award by the U.S. Marine Corps to Northrop Grumman for helicopter protection and extends the DIRCM installation capability to the CH-46E. Initially, this contract will provide for the installation design, trial installation, and flight tests leading to a production program that will enable integration of the Northrop Grumman DIRCM self-protection system onto the Marines' CH-46E helicopter fleet.
"This program, together with the DIRCM program for the CH-53E, demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. Marine Corps and Northrop Grumman to protect the warfighters from one of the most lethal threats they face in the Global War on Terrorism," said Robert Del Boca, sector vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division. "We are honored to have been selected by the USMC to equip their fighting force with this leading edge technology."
The only such aircraft protection system currently in production, Northrop Grumman's DIRCM system is now installed or scheduled for installation on several hundred military aircraft to protect approximately 40 different large fixed-wing transports and small rotary-wing platforms from infrared missile attacks. The system functions by automatically detecting a missile launch, determining if it is a threat and activating a high-intensity laser-based countermeasure system to track and defeat the missile.
Northrop Grumman Corporation is a $30 billion global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide.
