HOT SPRINGS, Ark., Feb. 20, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) subsidiary, Remotec, Inc., is a corporate sponsor of the 2008 Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) Initiative Conference, which brings together students who participate in 180 EAST Initiative learning and community service-related programs around the nation.

The EAST Initiative is a nonprofit organization that provides new ways of learning for modern students. EAST focuses on student-driven service projects through the use of the latest in technology. EAST's focus, however, is not on technology itself, but on the unique learning environment in which students are responsible for creating their own lesson plans and are guided by an EAST facilitator rather than having lectures and tests. The conference is held Feb. 19-21.

"Northrop Grumman is very concerned about the availability of good engineers and scientists for the future," said Mack Barber, Remotec president. "We need to make certain that the United States remains the leader in technology. We are very committed to supporting students and encouraging them to seek out technology careers. Many of these young people are making career decisions in middle school and high school, and EAST provides such a tremendous program that we are very excited about supporting it."

Matt Dozier, president of the EAST Initiative, said the program "celebrates the most powerful and relevant educational experience offered in schools today" and added that, "Sophisticated technology, authentic application and real-world projects are driven by the interest and commitment of the students who are themselves gaining the skills necessary to succeed and lead in the 21st century. More than 1,700 EAST students from across the country will gather at this event to share and demonstrate the projects that they are undertaking back home."

Dozier also said support from companies like Northrop Grumman is important to the success of today's students. "We are excited that progressive and dynamic organizations like Northrop Grumman share our dedication to making sure that the next wave of engineers, entrepreneurs, and leaders has the opportunity to experience this type of educational environment. Their generous sponsorship helps to better prepare EAST students to take on the responsibilities and the jobs that will be waiting for them when they mature. In addition, having the opportunity to interact with professionals helps our students to see their possible futures as well. This is invaluable."

For more than 25 years, Remotec has served the military, explosive ordnance disposal units, hazardous material units, and other first responders as a leading provider of mobile robotic systems for application into a variety of undesirable, hazardous, and potentially life-threatening environments.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a $32 billion global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide.
