FALLS CHURCH, Va., Sept. 26, 2012 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) was named a 2012 Cool Planet Award winner by The Climate Registry and Southern California Edison (SCE) for its environmental leadership in energy and carbon management.
The Cool Planet Awards recognize SCE customers who have implemented energy-efficient projects after Jan. 1, 2010, that save at least 500,000 kilowatt-hours annually. Northrop Grumman's Southern California facilities served by SCE reported a cumulative energy savings of more than 6 million kilowatt-hours annually from energy efficient projects implemented since Jan. 1, 2010.
"Energy efficiency is a logical business strategy, providing both economic and environmental benefits," said Constance Soloway, Enterprise Shared Services vice president of human resources, environmental health and safety, facilities and flight operations for Northrop Grumman. "These facilities projects support our goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They are also prudent investments that drive business outcomes and reflect our commitment to corporate responsibility in the communities in which we operate."
Northrop Grumman made a commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent, normalized to sales, by year-end 2014 relative to a 2008 baseline. The company is on track to achieve this goal, driven by strong support from facilities projects that have improved building and operational energy efficiency, as well as green information technology and engineering, and manufacturing initiatives.
The Climate Registry is a nonprofit collaboration among North American states, provinces, territories and Native Sovereign Nations that sets consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions into a single registry. The Climate Registry's Cool Planet Project highlights the relationship between energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions, providing utility company business customers assistance in managing their energy and carbon output.
An Edison International (NYSE:EIX) company, Southern California Edison is one of the nation's largest electric utilities, serving a population of nearly 14 million via 4.9 million customer accounts in a 50,000-square-mile service area within Central, Coastal and Southern California.
