AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW, Feb. 11, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has authorized Thycon Pty. Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia, to begin producing the main power supply for its Multirole Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) radar, following a successful production readiness review.
Designated the Aft Lower Lobe Module (ALLM), the power supply is roughly the size of a small desk. It will generate 123 kilowatts of power for the MESA radar, which Northrop Grumman is producing under contract to The Boeing Company for the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) Wedgetail 737 airborne early warning and control aircraft. As the launch customer, the ADF has purchased four systems.
Delivery of the first ALLM is scheduled for May 2003. This work will position Thycon to provide maintenance and logistics support for the unit, as well as lead to potential follow-on orders from Northrop Grumman as future international sales materialize.
The MESA antenna is an innovative aperture that provides a 360-degree azimuth scan with no mechanical rotation. Attached to the top aft section of the fuselage, it consists of an advanced composite structure that supports side-emitting electronic manifold arrays and a "top hat" end-fire array. Its ultralight construction enables state-of-the-art performance at a fraction of current system weights, thereby allowing additional time on station for the aircraft.
Thycon is an Australian engineering company with over 35 years of experience in developing, manufacturing and marketing power conversion products that span a wide range of applications throughout industry.
