RESTON, Va., Nov. 27, 2006 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- More than three million travel authorizations have been processed by Defense Travel System (DTS), which was developed by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC). The three millionth authorization -- the document that initiates travel -- was submitted Nov. 3 by Paul Ransom, a civilian engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock, in West Bethesda, Md.
A key system contributing to U.S. Department of Defense business transformation, DTS is a Web-based, secure, end-to-end system that is automating travel and travel management for military and civilian employees of the Defense Department. DTS is now operational at all major military installations, sites that generate more than 80 percent of the commercial travel transactions.
"This major milestone was achieved following the record-setting month of October, during which DTS processed nearly 200,000 travel authorizations," said Rich Fabbre, DTS program manager at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector. "As DTS usage continues to surge, travelers, like Mr. Ransom, are learning that DTS is easy and convenient to use and saves time."
With a common access card, users can connect to the DTS Website from any computer anytime, anywhere. Entering data only once, travelers can make comprehensive travel arrangements, get trip requests authorized, and submit claims electronically for approval and reimbursement. Once the supervisor approves the claim, the traveler is paid in about three days through an automated electronic transfer of funds directly to the traveler's bank account.
"Speedy reimbursement is a particularly well-received feature among travelers," Fabbre said.
DTS automates authorizations, reservations, voucher processing, payment and archiving for Defense Department travel transactions. It replaces manual travel administration with automated solutions, reducing travel costs, preventing waste and abuse, simplifying travel management, and improving customer service.
