Northrop Grumman Sponsors Young Falcons of Korea Education Program for Future Aerospace Leaders

SEOUL – April 1, 2021 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) and the Young Falcons of Korea (YFK) will host the ‘Future Aerospace Leaders Club of Nation (FALCON) Course’ for future Korean leaders in the aerospace field.

Sponsored by Northrop Grumman, Republic of Korea (ROK) Air Force, Korea Aerospace Industries and hosted by YFK, the eight-month course is designed to offer career exploration and discover future talents in the aerospace industry. Held from April to November, these future Korean aerospace leaders will experience future science and technology first-hand.

“Northrop Grumman is committed to supporting opportunities for career exploration and experiences for Korean students who dream of a future in STEM fields,” said Dong Ha, chief executive, Northrop Grumman South Korea. “We sponsor this program to provide Korean youth with an opportunity to learn and experience first-hand what a future career in aerospace may entail.”

The course will offer a variety of activities including aerospace experimental classes and career exploration camps to middle school students. The students will have the opportunity to meet with air force pilots, tour aerospace facilities and participate in a variety of aerospace-industry events throughout the duration of the program.

The virtual event will be held Nov. 26 to Dec. 18 for female high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Sponsored by Northrop Grumman and hosted by WISET, the WOMEN@STEM Career Day is a career exploration program designed to cultivate future talent in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Northrop Grumman, US Army Install Improved Missile Early Warning System in Republic of Korea

SEOUL, South Korea and HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Nov. 2, 2020 – The U.S. Army and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) have deployed enhanced Joint Tactical Ground Station (JTAGS) capabilities in South Korea, advancing battlespace awareness and missile defense in the region.

This deployment marks the completion of phase one of the JTAGS modernization program. The system was first fielded in tactical shelters in 1997 to provide in-theater missile warning using data directly from satellite sensors.

“This is a tremendous milestone in our decades-long mission of delivering missile warning and defense capabilities to protect our joint warfighters and allies,” said Kenn Todorov, vice president and general manager, combat systems and mission readiness, Northrop Grumman. “JTAGS is vital to warfighters and of growing importance as we create true Joint All-Domain Command and Control systems, especially as we find new ways to integrate and leverage space-based assets.”

JTAGS receives and processes data directly down-linked from the Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) constellation of satellites, including Defense Support Program and Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) sensors, and other infrared satellite sensors. JTAGS then disseminates near-real-time warning, alerting and cueing information on ballistic missile launches and other tactical events of interest throughout the theater using multiple communications networks.

Under the phase one modernization effort, Northrop Grumman and the Army installed JTAGS Block II in permanent facilities in Japan, Qatar, Italy and the Republic of Korea, with updates to hardware, software and communication systems, and enhancements to cyber-security and the soldier-machine interface. The deployments included soldier training and exercise support capabilities.

Northrop Grumman is already executing phase two of the JTAGS Pre-planned Product improvement (P3I) modernization program, delivering additional sensor processing capabilities and updating software architecture.

Under the direction of the JTAGS Product Office, Integrated Fires Mission Command (IFMC) Project Office, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, Northrop Grumman has been the JTAGS prime contractor since 1994, responsible for developing, fielding, maintaining and enhancing the system worldwide.

Northrop Grumman, WISET Hold Two More WOMEN@STEM Career Day Events

SEOUL – July 18, 2019 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) and the Korea Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET) announced they are holding two more ‘WOMEN@STEM Career Day’ events for high school girls and female college and graduate students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The first of three WOMEN@STEM Career Day events was held in February and provided students an opportunity for career exploration and inspiration in STEM. The next WOMEN@STEM Career Day events will be held at the Seoul Trade Exhibition and Convention (SETEC) in Seoul July 18 and at the Busan Tourism Organization’s Arpina July 20 in Busan.

“Following the first WOMEN @ STEM Career Day, we are once again deeply moved to meet the enthusiastic talents of these students,” said Dong Ha, chief executive, Northrop Grumman South Korea. “Northrop Grumman will continue to encourage Korean female students’ interest in the STEM field through the ongoing partnership with WISET and will provide support to find and cultivate female science and technology talents who will lead the future of Korea.”

Nearly 400 high school and college students, who are engaged in engineering research projects supported by WISET, will participate in the career day events. The students will attend various lectures and mentoring sessions. To strengthen the networking among research teams and to nurture women scientists and engineers in Korea, university students will act as junior mentors to their high school student peers. College students and graduate student researchers are provided additional mentoring and special lectures, such as learning how to write an English thesis. A variety of women scientists and engineers will share their real-life industry experiences with the students, including a presentation by a Northrop Grumman female engineer who participated in the development of the James Webb Space Telescope under NASA.

“Along with WOMEN@STEM Career Day, WISET is currently carrying out various projects to cultivate talented women in the STEM field. For instance, through the ‘Engineering Research Team’ project, WISET provides female high school/college/graduate students with hands-on experiences in research activities and supports necessary education and advices,” said Ahn Hye-yeon, president of WISET. “We will continue our efforts to cultivate female talents in the STEM field through continuous industry cooperation."

In addition to the sponsorship for WOMEN@STEM Career Day, Northrop Grumman has been supporting STEM education in Korea through various activities for many years. The students and teacher from Dongju Girls Middle School, an all-girls school located in Busan, South Korea, will join fellow participants from around the world at the week-long camp.

Northrop Grumman Foundation Sponsors Students and Teachers from Six Countries to Attend Space Camp®

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – July 8, 2019 – The Northrop Grumman Foundation announced it is sponsoring middle school students and teachers from across the globe to attend Space Camp®. Participants from Australia, Japan, South Korea, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States will attend the program this week, July 7-12. Held annually at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center® (USSRC) in Huntsville, Alabama, the camp is an experiential learning program aimed at inspiring and exciting students and teachers in space exploration and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The Northrop Grumman Foundation is sponsoring 60 teachers and 107 students to attend this year’s camp. The Foundation has sponsored the program for 11 years, partnering with over 280 schools, exposing more than 1,000 students and teachers worldwide to this once in a lifetime opportunity.

The WOMEN@STEM Career Day provided the students with practical advice and realistic experiences through various programs such as special career lectures, mentoring and a career opportunities booth. Female college students majoring in computer engineering, information security, robotics and virtual engineering participated as junior mentors. Also, women leaders in the science and technology industry took part as special lecturers and interacted closely with the students to raise the understanding of STEM fields.

A special video address was delivered by Northrop Grumman’s Debbie Simmons, director of observatory system engineering for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. Simmons encouraged the students and shared her personal experiences as a female engineer along with vivid industry stories. In addition, she explained how the advanced technologies used at Northrop Grumman are attracting student interest in science and technology.

“As an engineer and a woman, I feel a responsibility to nurture future female scientists and I am very pleased to participate in WOMEN@STEM Career Day," said Simmons.

In addition, career experience booths were set up for the students to allow them to have the Fourth Industrial Revolution experiences such as a 3D printing demonstration, virtual reality programming and Arduino autonomous vehicles coding. The participants applied integrative thinking and creativity to understand the basic principles of each program.

“The passion and excitement of the students participating at WOMEN@STEM Career Day reinforces the need for systematic and practical career programs to foster more female scientists in South Korea,” said Dong Ha, chief executive, Northrop Grumman South Korea. “We will continue to help young students to develop interest in science and technology, and to establish a foothold for them to enter STEM-related careers.”

이번 ‘WOMEN@STEM 진로데이’는 진로 특강, 오찬 멘토링, 진로 체험 등의 프로그램들을 통해 여고생들에게 보다 현장감 있는 멘토링과 진로탐색을 위한 실질적인 체험의 기회를 제공하였다. 이를 위해 컴퓨터공학, 정보보호학, 로보틱스 및 가상공학 등 이공계열 학과를 전공하고 있는 여대생들이 주니어 멘토로 참가하고 해당 전공 출신의 현직 여성 과학기술인이 특강자로 나서 학생들과 가까이에서 교류하며 STEM 분야에 대한 이해도를 높였다.

또한 특별히 미국 NASA의 제임스 웹 우주 망원경(JWST)의 관측시스템 엔지니어링을 책임지는 노스롭그루먼의 데브라 시몬스 이사의 특강이 영상으로 마련됐다. 데브라 시몬스는 JWST 프로젝트의 시스템 엔지니어링을 총괄하는 여성 엔지니어로서 겪었던 경험담과 업계의 생생한 현장 이야기를 공유하며 여학생들의 STEM분야 진출을 응원하였다. 또한 최첨단 기술들이 실제 노스롭그루먼에서는 어떻게 활용되고 있는지 전달하며 이공계 분야에 대한 학생들의 흥미를 고취시켰다. 약 15분간 진행된 멘토링 및 질의응답 시간을 통해 데브라 시몬스 이사는 “여성 엔지니어로서 이러한 미래 여성과학인재 양성에 책임감을 느끼며, 이번 WOMEN@STEM 진로데이에 참여하게 되어 기쁘다”고 밝혔다.

그 외에도 4차 산업혁명시대에 발맞추어 3D 프린팅, VR코딩, 아두이노 자율주행 자동차 코딩 등 다양한 경험을 할 수 있는 진로 체험 부스가 마련되었다. 학생들은 각 프로그램의 원리를 이해하고, 직접 코딩에 참여해 원하는 결과물을 완성하는 과정을 통해 융합적 사고력을 적용하며 창의적이고 진취적인 과학 인재로 한층 더 성장할 수 있는 유익한 시간을 보냈다.

Northrop Grumman Providing Training and Sustainment Services to the Republic of Korea’s Fleet of Global Hawks

HERNDON, Va. – Nov. 14, 2018 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to provide contractor logistics support (CLS) to the Republic of Korea’s high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (HUAV) fleet.

The support for DAPA and the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) include: timely site activation in South Korea; complete training packages for pilots, operators and maintainers of the system; and a team of subject matter experts to provide seamless on-site and reach-back CLS support.

Northrop Grumman Screens Into the Unknown in South Korea to Inspire Future Engineers and Scientists

SEOUL – Nov. 5, 2017 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is highlighting NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) program to audiences in South Korea in a series of special screenings of the documentary film Into the Unknown as part of the company’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education outreach efforts. This is the first time Into the Unknown will be shown in South Korea.

The film, developed by the Northrop Grumman Foundation as a resource for teachers, students and space enthusiasts, is the story of building NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the revolutionary scientific successor to the Hubble space telescope. Featuring dynamic scenes of construction, conversations with scientists and engineers, and stunning visuals, Into the Unknown provides an in-depth look at one of the most daring scientific missions ever attempted.

The film will be screened during the second week of November at a number of schools in South Korean cities including Seoul, Daejeon and Gyeonggi. Students and teachers from selected schools, as well as others, will view the film and have a chance to speak to a program scientist and engineer. They will share how NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will become the premier space observatory for astronomers worldwide, extending the discoveries of the Hubble telescope and pushing the boundaries of what is capable for spacecraft.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is made up of four major components — the telescope, the integrated science instrument module, the spacecraft, and the sunshield. Northrop Grumman is under contract from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for the design and development of the telescope’s optics, sunshield and spacecraft.

Due for launch in 2019, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful infrared space telescope ever built and will observe the most distant objects in the universe, provide images of the first galaxies formed, and study unexplored planets around distant stars. The James Webb Space Telescope is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

Northrop Grumman Appoints Dong Ha as Chief Executive for South Korea

In this position he will be responsible for coordinating the corporation's relationship with South Korea, supporting current programs and growing the company’s in-country presence.

Prior to joining Northrop Grumman Ha completed a 27-year career in the U.S. Army, retiring as a colonel. In his last military assignment he served as the chief, Joint U.S. Military Affairs Group-Korea from 2009-2014. During that assignment he was responsible for the management of all U.S. Government military sales and defense security cooperation activities with the Republic of Korea.

About the 2016 Maritime RobotX Challenge

Bringing together 13 teams of university students from five countries (United States, Singapore, Republic of Korea, Japan and Australia), RobotX challenges each team to develop and test a highly-capable autonomous surface vessel in the hopes of inspiring innovative thought and unlocking engineering potential. The nearly 200 students will compete in a series of qualifying heats Tuesday, Dec. 13 – Saturday, Dec. 17. The finals will be held Sunday, Dec. 18.

SEOUL, South Korea -- The partnership between Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) and the Korean defense industry achieved another milestone in April with the completion of the first two component orders on the Republic of Korea Global Hawk Program.

This spring, Korean Jig and Fixture (KJF) delivered build-to-print aerospace grade precision machine parts for the first Republic of Korea Global Hawk. This comes in addition to the wire harness, which delivers electrical signals throughout the aircraft, which Firstec Company, Ltd. delivered earlier in the year.

Northrop Grumman signed a memoranda of understanding with Firstec and KJF in 2013 to support the Global Hawk. Manufacturing of the first Republic of Korea Global Hawk aircraft is currently underway at Northrop Grumman's Moss Point, Mississippi, facility. Final aircraft production will take place in Palmdale, California.

Korea is a key U.S. partner in ensuring peace and stability in the East Asia region. The Northrop Grumman Global Hawk, which can fly for more than 30 hours at altitudes up to 60,000 feet, is ideally suited to monitor and deter regional threats in support of Korea's defense forces.

The Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system has logged more than 180,000 flight hours, 75 percent of which were combat/operational missions. Korea purchased four Global Hawks under a foreign military sales procurement with the U.S. government awarded in December 2014.

Global Hawk supports military missions, anti-terrorism, anti-piracy, scientific and environmental work, as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts anywhere in the world. The system was used following natural disasters in Haiti, Japan and the Republic of the Philippines to make damage assessments and allow first responders to pinpoint where people needed help the most.

Korea's Unmanned Systems Suppliers Produce Global Hawk Components

Northrop Grumman to Start Production on Republic of Korea Global Hawks

SAN DIEGO – Feb. 2, 2015 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will begin production of four RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for the Republic of Korea's Air Force. The systems will provide valuable wide-area intelligence gathering capabilities to military commanders so they can make more informed decisions.

Under a contract awarded Dec. 16, the company will work closely with the U.S. Air Force to deliver the systems starting in 2018.

"It's clear that U.S. allies have seen the critical role Global Hawk plays for the U.S. Air Force around the world," said Mary Petryszyn, vice president, International, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "The system will be a vital link in the Republic of Korea's increasing leadership role in defending the peninsula."

The contract is for four aircraft, two ground stations and supporting equipment that allows Republic of Korea Air Force operators to control and maintain the system.

"This is a significant achievement for Northrop Grumman because it represents the first time a Global Hawk has been sold to an allied nation in the Asia-Pacific region under the Foreign Military Sales process," said Mary Petryszyn.

The contract announcement follows significant procurement decisions made by the Japanese and Australian governments to purchase the Global Hawk and the MQ-4C Triton – comprising Northrop Grumman's family of high-altitude, long-endurance UAS.
