Saudi Students Gather STEAM during Three-Day Innovation Challenge

For the seventh time, hundreds of Saudi Arabian undergraduate students gathered together for a three-day challenge to solve major issues in city development and sustainability. This year’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) Innovation Challenge focused on the following areas: the environment, cybersecurity and smarter living.

Hosted by the Innovation and Economic Development team at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Jeddah, the 304 participants split into 48 teams in May to start brainstorming ideas. Students represented 20 universities from across Saudi Arabia and 59 percent of these participants were women.

Northrop Grumman served as an event sponsor, demonstrating the company’s commitment to encouraging Saudi student interest in STEAM-related fields. Paul Casey, a business development director based in Northrop Grumman’s UAE office, served as a judge during the finals. “The STEAM Challenge was incredibly inspiring,” said Casey. “The energy and enthusiasm of the students was infectious and bodes well for a very bright future for the Kingdom.”

This year’s STEAM Innovation Challenge served as a great opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers from other universities while honing teambuilding skills. Walid Abukhaled, Northrop Grumman chief executive for the Middle East, noted, “It was amazing to see a record amount of student participation for this event.”

Each student team worked together to define their assigned problem, research market conditions, generate an idea, design a presentation about it and then pitch it to the panel of judges. The winning team, iCare, developed a bracelet to monitor pilgrims’ vitals and report accidents to healthcare providers for a better Hajj experience. The second-place team, Cure, developed a solution to incentivize collection of unused household medications to distribute to relief organizations. Third-place team, EHFADHHA, worked on demand prediction software for food retailers.

The excitement of the Challenge was evident, from positive participant feedback to the incredibly high level of social media engagement. The hashtag #KAUSTSTEAM was a trending topic on Twitter throughout the weekend of the Challenge, with more than 1,000 tweets. Organizers have already registered 500+ Saudi undergraduates interested in attending the next STEAM Innovation Challenge.

Northrop Grumman to Highlight Land, Air, Sea and Space Capabilities at IDEX 2019

The company will also demonstrate its air combat and crew protection capabilities, which include a special mission aircraft to conduct reconnaissance and combat missions, and the ability to integrate the Palletized Weapons System onto cargo aircraft to rapidly transform them into weaponized platforms. Likewise, technologies that identify incoming missiles (AAR-47) and warn of hostile small arms fire (ShotFinder) round out the air capabilities displays.

Northrop Grumman’s space-based technologies on display will include the GEOStar™-3, which supports satellites with an extension capability, providing up to 8,000 watts of increased battery power to the payload at its end-of-life. The company’s Mission Extension Vehicle, a spacecraft designed for satellite servicing and space logistics, provides rendezvous operations and docking features that also extend satellite life.

Key Northrop Grumman products to be shown at the NAVDEX pier include the remote-controlled Mine Hunting Unit and AQS-24B Mine Hunting System, which provide underwater mine detection, classification and identification from an unmanned surface vessel.

The Joint Threat Emitter provides a modern, reactive battlespace war environment, designed to help train military personnel to identify and effectively counter enemy missile or artillery threats.

It is a robust and ruggedized system that is easily relocated, reactive to aircrew/aircraft for fast-jet, fixed-wing and rotary-wing defensive measures, and can be rapidly reprogrammed with new threat parameters.

King Saud University Partners with Northrop Grumman for CyberArabia to Drive Innovation in Cyber Security Among University Students Nationwide

RIYADH, Oct. 9, 2017 – King Saud University and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) are joining hands for CyberArabia to foster innovation in cyber security among Saudi university students.

The third annual cyber security workshop and competition, CyberArabia, to be held Oct. 11-12, 2017, is part of the company’s global commitment to cyber education and workforce development, and will include a cyber defense competition that recognizes winners on both the men’s and women’s campuses across Saudi universities.

Following the hands-on workshop portion of CyberArabia, the competition challenges students to find and eradicate cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual images of common operating systems. Not only are the students challenged to put their cyber skills to the test, they must do so in a limited time. The structure of the competition helps to reinforce professional skills such as leadership, collaboration, teamwork and communication. Those teams that work best together to quickly identify vulnerabilities and harden their systems will be the most successful.

CyberArabia was inspired by and is supported by CyberPatriot, a U.S.-based, youth cyber-defense competition created in 2009 by the nonprofit Air Force Association and presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation. More than 4,400 teams of students participated in CyberPatriot IX last year. In addition, Northrop Grumman has partnered with Cyber Security Challenge UK to sponsor CyberCenturion, the first team-based cyber security contest in the United Kingdom.

Northrop Grumman Highlights Leading Global Security Capabilities at IDEX 2017

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Feb. 17, 2017 - Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) will showcase its global security capabilities, including C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance), cyber security and logistics systems at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) 2017, Feb. 19-23, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Saudi Students Selected to Participate in Unique Northrop Grumman Externship Program in US

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Two Saudi students have been selected by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) for a summer externship in the United States, where they will participate in a work-study program with companies affiliated with the renowned business incubator program at the bwtech@UMBC research and technology park of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Two of the students were selected from Al Faisal University and flown to the U.S. to participate in the program, which is coordinated in collaboration with both the UMBC English Language Institute and Career Center.

Arwa Al Anqari and Muneera Al Omran will both spend two months in the Baltimore region. Al Anqari is working at Amidus (www.amidus.com), which provides energy analytics, consulting and implementation services to commercial, institutional and governmental clients in the U.S. and internationally. Al Omran will work at Blue Wave Semiconductor (www.bluewavesemi.com), a high technology manufacturing company focused on supplying nanomaterial deposition tools for the research and development market worldwide.

During the externship program with bwtech@UMBC, students will learn effective entrepreneurial and technical skills in cyber program management and engineering; increase their knowledge of products and solutions to government and commercial customers; improve their business, English technical writing and professional communications skills; and gain effective hands-on experience with a technology company. The program represents a valuable opportunity for the participants, both Saudi women, to develop new expertise in a field where women have historically been underrepresented.

Commenting on the externship initiative, Walid Abukhaled, chief executive, Northrop Grumman Middle East Region, said: "This type of hands-on training is vital for Saudi students, especially Saudi females, who have traditionally been introduced to high technology on a theoretical level rather than receiving practical training.

Northrop Grumman Hosts Second Annual Cyber Defense Competition at King Saud University

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 4, 2016 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) in collaboration with King Saud University (KSU) hosted its second annual cyber security competition last week, known as CyberArabia, for students across Saudi universities. The program – part of the company's global commitment to cyber education and workforce development – was held on April 18 – 19 and included a cyber defense competition that recognized winners on both the men's and women's campuses.

This year's competition grew from approximately 70 participants in 2015 to a capacity group of more than 140 including students from Prince Sultan University, Princess Nora University and others.

"Any lasting solution to the threats posed by cyber attacks begins with a foundation in science, technology, engineering and math education coupled with cyber security awareness and training. We were delighted to work with the outstanding students across the Kingdom and faculty of King Saud University to once again bring this unique and powerful program to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."

During the hands-on instruction portion of the workshop, students from both the men's and women's campus used a simulated Windows system as instructors demonstrated important cyber security principles such as encryption, account management and security tools like firewalls and anti-malware.

Then, students put their skills to the test and broke into teams for a cyber defense competition. Teams were charged with hardening virtual networks and implementing security policies. Teams were scored on how fast and thoroughly they identified and remediated cyber vulnerabilities and intrusions – similar to what a cyber defender would do to protect information and networks. The top team from each day's competition received a CyberArabia Team Champion trophy and a cash award of 18,000 SAR.

The competition was modeled after the U.S. CyberPatriot Youth Cyber Defense Competition, a program created by the Air Force Association, a nonprofit organization advocating for education, and presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation.

"The students were thoroughly engaged in learning about cyber defense and how these new skills can lead to amazing opportunities in the field of cyber security," said Diane Miller, director, Global Cyber Education and Workforce Development Programs, Northrop Grumman. "The students were a diverse mix of majors including computer science, information technology, information systems and software engineering. That diversity of knowledge, skills and experience, combined with effective collaboration and communication, helped each team achieve its best."

On April 12, the foundation, in partnership with AFA, presented, the 8 ^th Annual CyberPatriot competition in Baltimore, Maryland. On April 26, in partnership with Cyber Security Challenge U.K., Northrop Grumman sponsored CyberCenturion , a U.K. version of CyberPatriot at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park.

The 8 ^th annual CyberPatriot competition is slated for April 12 in Baltimore. Created by the Air Force Association and presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation , teams of high school and middle school students will compete face-to-face in a one-day event to defend virtual networks and mobile devices from a professional aggressor team. A record 3,300 teams entered nationwide this year, with the top 28 teams - including three middle school teams - competing in the finals. Media are invited to attend the competition. The CyberArabia competition will take place at King Saud University, Riyadh, in Saudi Arabia on April 18 and 19. Northrop Grumman to Expand Communications System Capability at World's Busiest Airport, UAE

LONDON, March 8, 2016 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) announced that its U.K.-based subsidiary, Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems, is expanding the capability of the air traffic control (ATC) communication systems at Dubai International (DXB), the world's busiest international airport, and Dubai World Central (DWC) airport, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Under the terms of the contract awarded to Bayanat Engineering UAE, Dubai Air Navigation Services (DANS) will receive Park Air Sapphire portfolio products, including its latest Park Air T6 Radio at five radio sites located at each airport. The system will simultaneously support both legacy E1 and Voice over IP (VoIP) connectivity, enabling radio channels to be connected to a network of Park Air S4 IP Controllers, while also connecting to the airports' legacy voice switch.

The Park Air T6 Radio, an integral part of the Sapphire portfolio, will provide DANS with Simultaneous Call Transmission (SCT) detection. With SCT, the T6 Radio receiver detects two pilots speaking at the same time and sends an alert to the air traffic controller to take the appropriate action.

"To develop a radio of such advanced capability is a credit to our engineers," said Danny Milligan, managing director, Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems. "The new Park Air T6 Radio not only delivers a significant step forward in terms of performance, but also contributes to our environmental obligations. It is the lightest and smallest radio in its class, its power consumption has been minimised and toxic materials such as beryllia and lithium, which are traditionally required in radio designs, have been excluded."

The delivery of the system, which commences this month, will support the continuing ambitious growth plans at these two key airports. DXB is the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic with 78 million passengers in 2015, and DWC is a global aviation hub in the making which could become one of the world's largest airports with an ultimate capacity of up to 240 million passengers and 16 million tonnes of freight.

'CyberArabia' Inspires Students Toward Careers in Cyber Security

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – June 1, 2015 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) hosted a two-day cyber security awareness and training session called "CyberArabia" recently for students at King Saud University. The purpose of the event, held April 28-29, was to build interest and excitement for this critical, in-demand career field.

"Northrop Grumman was thrilled to host CyberArabia at King Saud University," said Walid Abukhaled, chief executive, Northrop Grumman Saudi Arabia. "The demand for cyber defenders has never been greater and we appreciate the university's foresight in understanding the importance of grooming future cyber talent to protect the Kingdom."

During the hands-on instruction portion of the workshop, students followed along in a simulated Windows system as instructors demonstrated important cyber security principles such as encryption, account management and security tools like firewalls and anti-malware.

Each afternoon, students broke into teams and went head-to-head in a cyber defence competition that put their newly acquired skills to the test. The competition was fashioned after the U.S. CyberPatriot youth cyber defense programme, presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and created by the Air Force Association – a nonprofit organization advocating for education.

Teams were scored on how fast and thoroughly they identified and remediated cyber vulnerabilities and intrusions – similar to what a cyber defender does to protect information and networks. Members of the top team from each day's competitions received a CyberArabia Champion trophy.

Abir Benabid Najjar, Ph.D., vice head of the Software Engineering Department, in the College of Computer and Information Sciences at King Saud University said, "Participants were ecstatic to participate in CyberArabia. Numerous students told me their 'participation in the CyberArabia competition was a great chance to prove their skills' and that it was 'fun participating in the competition.'" Added Najjar, "Another student described it this way, 'the CyberArabia competition opened up a new prescriptive for security to us, as it was our first time working on a cyber security-related area.'"

"Our workshop offered students a chance to learn about cyber defence as well as the amazing career opportunities available in cyber security," said Diane Miller, director, CyberPatriot Programs, Northrop Grumman. "Our partnership with King Saud University facilitated a critical transfer of knowledge about cyber defense training and awareness that will help students to build the skills needed to thrive in this field."

The AFA's CyberPatriot Program's goal is to inspire youth toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our global security. Under the agreement, MEL will offer the complete range of Sperry Marine's products, systems and services to customers in the UAE and surrounding region. Fifth annual Innovation Challenge inspires students across the UAE to 'Learn by Doing'

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Feb. 25, 2015 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) yesterday, renewing their joint commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the UAE.

The MOU, signed at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, marks the official launch of the 2015 Innovation Challenge competition.

The Innovation Challenge pairs Northrop Grumman mentors with HCT students to tackle a real-world engineering project: designing, building and then flying autonomous unmanned aircraft. The programme ends in a week-long competition where the student teams compete against each other in oral presentations and flight demonstrations.

"The Innovation Challenge continues to successfully enable our students, both male and female, to utilize the STEM-based knowledge gained through their courses in a very hands-on manner," said Dr Tayeb Kamali, vice chancellor of HCT.

"This competition is a wonderful example of HCT's commitment to the 'Learning by Doing' philosophy, where our students apply what they are taught in an interactive, practical setting. There students will compete against each other for a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the United States, where they will tour Northrop Grumman facilities and educational institutions specializing in STEM.
