Northrop Grumman Opens New Facility Supporting Missile Defense Solutions and Ground Based Strategic Deterrent Program

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Aug. 23, 2021 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) opened a new building today to support its advanced missile defense solutions and strategic deterrent business.

The new facility features advanced engineering, research labs, software development factories and a high-speed, multi-secured communications network allowing staff to better collaborate and deliver for key customers. The space gives Northrop Grumman added flexibility for future expansion and growth opportunities.

Company officials were joined by State Senator Bob Gardner, State Rep. Donald Valdez, Governor Polis’ Senior Advisor Jay Lindell, and El Paso County Commissioners Longinos Gonzalez and Holly Williams. Also in attendance were representatives from U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, the Colorado Legislature’s Aerospace and Defense Caucus, military, education, civic and other community organizations.

The Northrop Grumman Missile Defense Solutions team is responsible for several large Missile Defense Agency (MDA) programs including prime on MDA’s Specialized Warfighter Development Contract (SWDC), strategic partner role on MDA’s Ground-Based Missile Defense (GMD) and Command, Control, Battle Management Communication (C2BMC) programs, teammate on MDA’s Modeling & Simulation Contract – Framework (MaSC-F), support to Northrop Grumman’s prototype for the agency’s Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS), and prime on a Prototype Infrared Payload (PIRPL) experiment with the Space Development Agency (SDA).

The Northrop Grumman Strategic Deterrent Systems (SDS) team is responsible for the U.S. Air Forces Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program, which will modernize the land-based leg of the nation’s strategic nuclear triad. Northrop Grumman was awarded the prime contract for GBSD in September 2020 and is leading a nationwide team to develop the system and deliver an initial operational capability by 2029. The company’s GBSD headquarters is in Roy, Utah. US Air Force Selects Northrop Grumman to Continue its Role as ICBM Ground Subsystems Support Contractor

ROY, Utah – July 8, 2021 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been awarded a $306 million five-year base contract from the U.S. Air Force to continue its role as the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Ground Subsystems Support Contractor (GSSC). This competitive award has a potential ceiling of $3.86 billion over 18 years.

As prime contractor on GSSC since 2015, Northrop Grumman will continue to provide engineering and field services to sustain Minuteman III, the world’s oldest deployed strategic ballistic missile system, through the end of its service life later next decade.

Northrop Grumman and US Air Force Collaborate to Meet Integrated Baseline Review Milestone

ROY, Utah – April 7, 2021 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) successfully conducted the Integrated Baseline Review (IBR) for the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) program, a critical milestone that sets the performance measurement baseline and keeps the program on track for IOC by 2029.

“Meeting our GBSD commitments is paramount,” said Greg Manuel, vice president and general manager, strategic deterrent systems division, Northrop Grumman. “Our team remains focused on delivering a modern strategic deterrent capability to keep pace with 21st century threats.”

IBR occurs within the first 180 days of contract award to set cost and schedule baseline, identify and quantify risks, and ensure mitigation plans are in place when executing the program. Early in the review, Northrop Grumman and the Air Force collaborated to develop a common understanding about the project’s baseline as it relates to technical, schedule, cost, resource, and management process risks and their impacts.

The next key milestone is the integrated baseline review (IBR).

The EMD baseline review (EBR) is an assessment of the current technical baseline, which includes user requirements, program data and configuration elements, and is the first step in transitioning ownership of the allocated baseline to the government. The three-day event was held virtually with more than 100 people in attendance throughout Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Air Force. The team is currently on schedule to meet IBR, which sets the program’s performance measurement baseline.

Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract to Replace Aging ICBM System

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Sept. 8, 2020 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) was selected by the U.S. Air Force to modernize the nation’s aging intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system under a $13.3 billion contract awarded today for the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program.

The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center announced that the effort will span 8.5 years and include weapon system design, qualification, test and evaluation and nuclear certification. Upon successful completion of EMD, the Northrop Grumman team will begin producing and delivering a modern and fully integrated weapon system to meet the Air Force schedule of initial operational capability by 2029.

Thirteen days in October 1962 nearly resulted in a nuclear war.

The Soviet Union had installed nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba, and in turn, the United States set up a naval quarantine around the island nation. It was a standoff that marked one of the most dangerous moments in the Cold War, and it was resolved only when the Soviets removed the missiles.

A key factor in resolving this issue was the nation’s Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system, a formidable strategic deterrent with vastly more capability than the adversary’s system. It has been nearly 60 years since the ICBM became operational, and integrating current technological modifications costs more than designing, developing, deploying and operating a new land-based strategic deterrent

As a result, the U.S. Air Force has decided to replace virtually the entire ICBM system, including the weapon systems command and control; flight, launch and ground systems; and cyber elements. The new system will be called the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD).

The Air Force plans to award two technical maturation and risk reduction (TMRR) contracts in 2017. Northrop Grumman assembled experts within the entire company to write the TMRR proposal, which was submitted in mid-October.

Northrop Grumman has been the Air Force’s ICBM industry partner since its earliest days, when Gen. Bernard Schriever asked the Ramo-Wooldridge Corp. to provide system engineering and technical direction. Since then, Northrop Grumman has worked on every aspect of the ICBM system (Ramo-Wooldridge was acquired by TRW, which was acquired by Northrop Grumman).

The company served as the prime contractor on the recently concluded ICBM Prime Integration Contract, managed every upgrade of the Minuteman III missile and now serves as the Ground Subsystems Support contractor — the largest current contract supporting the ICBM system.

Northrop Grumman Submits Proposal for Ground Based Strategic Deterrent Program

REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – Oct. 17, 2016 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) submitted a proposal to the United States Air Force to modernize the nation’s intercontinental ballistic missile system (ICBM) with the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program.

GBSD will replace the existing ICBM missile system, including the weapon systems command and control; flight, launch and ground systems; and cyber elements.

“The ICBM system has been an effective deterrent since its inception,” said Carol Erikson, GBSD vice president and capture manager, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. “Northrop Grumman has submitted a proposal leveraging our comprehensive ICBM weapons system understanding to deliver a low-risk, adaptable solution within cost and schedule.”

Northrop Grumman brings insight into GBSD requirements based on a partnership with the Air Force that started more than 60 years ago when TRW, a Northrop Grumman heritage company, was awarded a contract to provide systems engineering and technical direction to the Air Force.

Since then, the company has served as the systems integrator on every ICBM weapon system and, as a result, has the extensive systems engineering expertise required for GBSD. Northrop Grumman was the prime contractor on the recently completed ICBM Prime Integration Contract and is currently the Ground Subsystem Sustainment contractor.
