On Oct. 29, 2018, Shawn Purvis, corporate vice president and president, Enterprise Services, Northrop Grumman, spoke at an event celebrating the first enrollment class of the school’s ADVANCE program.

Below are her remarks:

Good afternoon, I’m Shawn Purivs, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Enterprise Services.

On behalf of the 85,000 men and women who work for Northrop Grumman, I’m delighted to be a part of today’s celebration.

We all recognize the growing need for a skilled workforce, trained and equipped to maintain our nation’s digital framework in a globalized and competitive world, which is more important now than ever before. There are far more high-tech positions to be filled than skilled workers to fill them.

More collaboration between business, government and academia is clearly essential. The program we celebrate today is exactly the kind of progress our region calls out for.

Our partnership will prepare students for the technical workforce. In addition to supporting students in their pursuit of technical degrees we also recognize that internships and job opportunities are essential to the success of this program, and we are committed to that success. Northrop Grumman believes business has a responsibility to be a part of these partnerships.

This is why we are so pleased to be associated with the ADVANCE program. The ADVANCE program continues this great tradition of collaboration and will keep our region competitive in the decades to come.

On behalf of Northrop Grumman, our Foundation and our employees, I am pleased to offer our congratulations.

And now, it’s a great pleasure to introduce our next speaker, Dr. Scott Ralls.

One of the themes today is that of partnerships and as president of Northern Virginia Community College, Dr. Ralls has proven an indispensable partner in every sense of the word.

Defending the Web: Kathy Warden discusses importance of building a diverse, highly skilled cybersecurity workforce

When it comes to safeguarding our national and economic security in today’s digital world, cybersecurity is essential. But a growing demand for talent in this field has revealed a huge shortage of skilled workers and qualified students.

On May 18, 2017, Northrop Grumman and the Business Higher Education Forum (BHEF) joined with The Atlantic Magazine to sponsor a discussion titled, Defending the Web: A Forum on Cybersecurity and the Workforce.

In this two-hour discussion, stakeholders in higher education, business, and government joined to explore the cybersecurity jobs pipeline and the future of the industry.

Kathy Warden, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, shared her perspective on the importance of building a diverse, highly skilled cybersecurity workforce during a one-on-one conversation with BHEF CEO, Brian Fitzgerald.
