With CNBC reporter Morgan Brennan as master of ceremonies, the Foundation celebrated notable contributions to our nation’s space program.

RNASA was founded in 1985 to organize and coordinate an annual event to recognize outstanding achievements in space and create greater public awareness of the benefits of space exploration. Since 1989, the Foundation has presented the National Space Trophy to an outstanding individual who has made major contributions in space achievement. Former NASA astronaut Frank Culbertson presented this year’s National Space Trophy to David W. Thompson, retired founder, CEO and president of Orbital ATK, now Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems.

<img align="center" alt="Northrop Grumman Wins Individual Team Awards at Annual RNASA Foundation Stellar Gala_1" author="" class="widget-image" custom_size="false" data-imgheight="562" data-imgwidth="750" file_id="5cd5bc562cfac23b4557e78d" height="562" src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/295/files/20194/5cd5bc562cfac23b4557e78d_Northrop+Grumman+Wins+Individual+Team+Awards+at+Annual+RNASA+Foundation+Stellar+Gala_1/Northrop+Grumman+Wins+Individual+Team+Awards+at+Annual+RNASA+Foundation+Stellar+Gala_1_2e48107f-2594-4b6f-8263-22057869019b-prv.jpg" title="David Thompson is presented with the 2019 RNASA National Space Trophy by Frank Culbertson.

RNASA also presents the Stellar awards to outstanding individuals in the industry in the team and early, mid and late career categories. Winners are selected by a Stellar Awards Evaluation Panel based on which accomplishments hold the greatest promise for furthering future activities in space, the extent to which the nominee played a key role in the accomplishment and the extent to which the nominee meets the goal of recognizing "unsung heroes."

This year’s nominations were evaluated by former National Associate Administrator for Space Systems Development, Arnold D. Aldrich, and former National Space Trophy winners, Col. Eileen Collins, USAF (Ret.), Capt. Michael L. Coats, USN (Ret.), and Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, USAF (Ret.). Out of 140 nominations received, the panel selected 24 individuals and seven teams for recognition.

The Stellar Award winners each received engraved marble trophies. At the banquet, astronauts Colonel Mark Vande Hei and Dr. Shannon Walker presented trophies to each of the winners.

Northrop Grumman is proud to have had two individual winners take home awards this year. Congratulations go out to Kathleen S. Bonner and Cassie Wong for receiving the Early Career Stellar Award.

Northrop Grumman’s Jessica Donaldson (center) delivered the keynote speech at the NSBE Professionals Evening of Distinction. Donaldson accepted an award behalf of Northrop Grumman and an individual award “for being an outstanding example of a true leader.”

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Professionals honored Northrop Grumman and electronics engineering manager Jessica Donaldson on Nov. 17 during its Evening of Distinction 30th Anniversary and Scholarship Gala in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The event, keynoted by Donaldson, celebrated 30 years of NSBE Professionals who continue to excel academically and professionally, creating a positive impact in their community.

Northrop Grumman and Donaldson were honored for their continued support of NSBE Professionals and partnership with the organization.

On stage, Donaldson reflected on the NSBE’s history, starting as the dream of two young men at Purdue University and growing to its current 17,000 members and more than 500 chapters in the U.S. and abroad.

Donaldson shared her story, which included growing up as one of twelve siblings raised by a single mother in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York, after her parents divorced. She also talked about the tragic death of her brother, Robert, and the violence within her community. Despite significant hardships, all of her siblings grew up to become doctors, business professionals and entrepreneurs. In her speech, Donaldson implored the audience to heed their internal call to follow their dreams.

“You could have lived at any moment in history, but you exist right now,” Donaldson said. “Your dreams, whatever they are, have been planted inside of you to sprout at this very moment. So no matter what stage you are in life, how old you are, what you have or have not accomplished, embedded in you are dreams.”

During her 11-year career at Northrop Grumman, Donaldson has effectively led multiple efforts to implement more efficient business practices and organizational structure, earning internal accolades. She also lends time and energy to several philanthropic organizations, including Minority Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, NSBE, the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids programs, Maryland Business Roundtable for Education and more. Donaldson holds a Ph. D. in systems engineering from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Proceeds from the event benefitted the Edward E. Barnette Jr. Community Impact Scholarship and the scholarships of local NSBE Professionals chapters.

NSBE, founded in 1975, supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology.

Northrop Grumman’s Harry Reed (center) accepts NASA’s Outstanding Public Leadership Medal from Eugene Tu (left), Ames Research Center director, and Jody Singer (right), Marshall Space Flight Center director.

“Harry’s technical and programmatic contributions to the shuttle program and his commitment to the next deep space human rated launch vehicle, the Space Launch System, are invaluable,” said Jody Singer, the acting director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. “His commitment to exploration, mission safety and the people make him so deserving of the Outstanding Public Leadership Medal.”

Reed has distinguished himself as an exceptional leader through various leadership positions within Northrop Grumman including program manager positions, work center director and space shuttle deputy program manager. He is currently the senior director for the booster element of the Space Launch System (SLS) program.

“Harry's vast experience in production and manned space flight gives me great confidence as we approach the first flight of the SLS vehicle,” said Bruce Tiller, NASA’s manager of the SLS Boosters Office at Marshall Space Flight Center. “I routinely rely on his leadership and his integrity to make sure we are on the right path.”

During Reed’s years as a manager on the space shuttle program, he was essential to the implementation of design initiatives to balance the overall production flow, eliminate waste and improve the efficiency and repeatability of the reusable solid rocket motor manufacturing process. He directed the successful property disposition and transfer program at the end of the Shuttle Program, and he was the “boots on the ground” leadership when flight segments were damaged after a train trestle collapsed.

“Harry has long been a nationally-recognized technical expert in solid rocket motors, but he equally deserves recognition for being a truly exceptional leader,” said Charlie Precourt, vice president and general manager, propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman. “He fosters an environment where the women and men on his team understand they are part of something great, and I am very pleased to see him receive NASA’s Outstanding Public Leadership Medal.”

Recently, Reed led Northrop Grumman through a successful Booster Element Design Certification Review. He has also been managing heritage assets and establishing business systems to start up SLS booster production at Kennedy Space Center. When SLS launches in 2020, returning humans to deep space for the first time in over four decades, the performance of the SLS boosters will largely be a credit to Reed and his team.

Jeannie Hilger (far right), vice president of Northrop Grumman’s communications business, celebrates the honor of being named a Cool Woman of 2018 at the Girl Scouts San Diego annual Cool Women luncheon and ceremony April 13. Hilger was introduced by Paige Zimmerman, an Emerging Leader Girl Scout and a junior at Escondido Charter High School, and joined by Carol Dedrich (left), CEO of Girl Scouts San Diego.

The 18th annual Cool Women luncheon and ceremony, held April 13, demonstrates support for programs that help empower girls to use their voices, develop a strong sense of self, step outside their comfort zones and build resilience.

Paige Zimmerman, a junior at Escondido Charter High School, introduced Hilger during the program. “Like most innovators, where others see obstacles, Jeannie sees opportunities,” Zimmerman said. “In fact, she loves solving problems so much, she’s encouraging Girl Scouts and others to do so.” The teen wrote the introduction based on her recent, one-on-one meeting with Hilger.

Zimmerman is one of 30 “Emerging Leader Girl Scouts” who attended the luncheon and participated in a morning mentoring session where Hilger and other successful female executives and community leaders shared insights about careers, education pathways and overcoming challenges. The Emerging Leader Girl Scouts were selected for their potential and the outstanding achievements that are already making the world a better place.

Hilger, a former Girl Scout, said a common bond she shares with the Girl Scout organization is a passion for involving young women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). “It’s so important, and so vital to our country, to have students in leadership roles and to have them involved in STEM,” Hilger said. “Girl Scouts has given you the foundation you need. You can do anything in life.”

In support of the Girl Scouts, the San Diego-based business that Hilger leads launched “Think Outside the Cookie Box.” Now in its fourth year, this day-long STEM conference gives girls the opportunity to perform hands-on science activities, engage with a panel of women engineers and visit company labs. Northrop Grumman is also a bronze sponsor and active participant in the Girl Scout Outreach STEM camp.

Hilger also established the Adelante Engineering Academy at the company’s San Diego site, which has enlightened more than 2,000 students, from elementary school to college, about the benefits of receiving a STEM degree.

Hilger leads strategy and operations of Northrop Grumman’s San Diego-based communications business, which develops and deploys advanced military communications and support systems. These include fifth-generation aircraft avionics, airborne gateways and networks, distributed mission live-virtual-constructive training and military satellite communications systems.

During her 30-year career with Northrop Grumman, Hilger – an expert in the full-lifecycle development and integration of large-scale systems – has executed multiple programs and led multi-disciplinary, cross-organizational teams to solve complex programmatic and technical problems.

Hilger was named a 2016 National Latina of the Year by the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF), one of the nation's largest Latino human service organizations.

“Our organization provides girls with a world’s best girl leadership experience, in an inclusive, girl-led space that empowers them to take the lead,” said Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol M. Dedrich. “By shining a spotlight on these extraordinary Cool Women, we are inspiring today’s Girl Scouts to reach their own potential.”

Girl Scouts of the USA is the nation’s preeminent leadership development organization for girls, with a mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Farina has been designated an honorary naval aviator for his “truly extraordinary” contributions to naval aviation. Farina is the 29th recipient of the award since the program began in October 1949.

Capt. Trevor Estes, commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129, pinned Farina with the “Wings of Gold” on behalf of Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John M. Richardson, Jan. 13, at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. As a new honorary naval aviator, Farina now has the right to wear the wings.

Northrop Grumman employee Joseph J. Farina has been designated an honorary naval aviator for his “truly extraordinary” contributions to naval aviation. Farina is the 29th recipient of the award since the program began in October 1949.

Farina, a senior logistics field representative for Northrop Grumman, was cited for providing more than four decades of support to the U.S. Navy and the airborne electronic attack community on hundreds of successful major carrier and expeditionary deployments and numerous contingency and combat operations.

Previous awardees include Adm. Arleigh Burke, Gen. James “Jimmy” Doolittle, Vice Adm. Hyman C. Rickover, Senator John Warner, Bob Hope and Jackie Cooper. Only one other Northrop Grumman employee has been honored: Corwin “Corky” Meyer, Grumman Aerospace’s first official full-time chief experimental test-pilot, became Honorary Naval Aviator No. 23, in 1997.

For 42 of his 53 years with the company, Farina was the face of Northrop Grumman at Whidbey Island. To numerous naval commands, wings, squadrons and supply depots and thousands of aircrew who called him “Papa Joe,” Farina was the link to the company to ensure the EA-18G Growlers of today and the EA-6B Prowlers and A-6 Intruders of the past were always ready for combat.

“No airborne electronic attack squadron has missed an operation or combat sortie during his four decade watch,” said Estes.

Before moving to Whidbey Island in 1975, Farina worked on the team that designed, assembled, integrated and tested the Lunar Module for the Apollo program in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He received the Manned Space-Flight Awareness Award from NASA for his work on Apollo 16.

Farina joined Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. in Bethpage, New York, in 1964. After service spanning eight presidential administrations and touching the lives of thousands of warfighters and their families, he will officially retire on Feb. 24.
