Yet, because these arid conditions provide rare occurrences of any weather other than sunshine, it’s the ideal location to design launch vehicles for critical missions — all from a state-of-the art facility with environmental efficiencies and green technologies meticulously planned around this unique desert landscape.

The campus' plants were selected for their drought-tolerance; they consume much less water than the average plant, supporting the campus' water conservation goal.

Situated on 45 acres of land in the heart of Chandler, Arizona’s business corridor, the more than 650,000 square foot modern facility — one of the largest custom build-to-suit facilities in the western United States — includes engineering, testing, manufacturing and office spaces where more than 2,400 employees define possible.

“The facility really is green from the perimeter in,” said Doug Harvey, Chandler facilities manager, Northrop Grumman. “It was a rewarding project to work on as we incorporated new technology to make our Chandler campus highly efficient and minimize its environmental footprint. Even the landscaping incorporates sustainability.”

Luscious greenery and trees are not the first things that come to mind when you think of a desert, but around the campus there are more than 2,000 plants serving an important purpose: to stop erosion and reduce water runoff. Given that rain doesn’t happen very often in the Phoenix metropolitan area, these plants were selected for their drought-tolerance. While their main source of water is still from rain, they consume much less of it than the average plant, supporting the campus’ water conservation objective.

“The landscaping is beautiful and water conservation is vital when you live in a desert,” said Harvey.

To absorb as much natural sun light as possible, the campus has double pane and low emissivity glass.

According to Harvey, water conservation was a huge focus of the build. To date, the facility has saved more than one million gallons of water. The facility includes automatic sinks — which use 30 to 40 percent less water than traditional sinks — and low flow, no tank toilets. Water used in the facility for production is captured, filtered and evaporated, reducing water discharge volume by 90 percent.

“We are reducing the facility’s impact and creating a healthy workspace,” said Judy Palacio, environment health and safety manager, Northrop Grumman. “It is great to work for an organization committed to taking care of its employees and the environment.

Optimizing electricity is another important objective for the site. “We moved into this building in the fall of 2019, and have doubled our headcount since then, yet we are using about 30 percent less power (kw) than our previous locations,” said Harvey.

Some of the energy-saving technologies include high efficiency chillers and boilers, humidification system, R30 Roofing System (which uses thicker insulation than typical roofs, meaning less heat transfer and improved temperature control), and all LED lighting with a lighting control system. This highly energy-efficient plant — which is designed well above the International Energy Conservation Codes — also includes a building automation system, an intelligent system of both hardware and software that connects the heating, venting and air conditioning system, lighting, security and other systems to communicate on a single platform.

Environmental efficiencies and green technologies were built into the design of the Northrop Grumman state-of-the art facility in Chandler, Arizona.

The glass-covered building was designed to absorb as much natural sun light as possible. “With temperatures rising to over 120 degrees in the summer, you wouldn’t think of glass as the best way to deter heat,” said Harvey. “The glass is double pane and low emissivity, which traps the thermal energy, stopping the heat from radiating throughout the facility, while letting good sunlight in.”

Natural light is abundant throughout the campus, and the views of the surrounding outdoor spaces have benefits beyond sustainability. According to a recent study at Cornell University, the benefits of natural light in an office environment have been scientifically proven to increase productivity and satisfaction, while reducing issues such as headaches, eyestrain and blurred vision by 84 percent.

The efforts to make Northrop Grumman’s Chandler campus ‘green’ was a combined partnership with the Douglas Allred Company and Willmeng Construction during the design and build process. All three companies have been recognized in the state of Arizona – receiving three awards from the National Association for Industrial and Office Properties in the categories of Economic Development, Office Build to Suit and Industrial Build to Suit.

“Our employees are proud about where they work,” said Harvey. “Not only because of the beautiful campus and our critical mission of defending our nation’s homeland and solving some of the toughest problems in space, but also because they can see, every day, that Northrop Grumman is investing in an efficient and ‘green’ home.”

Northrop Grumman’s Aircraft Maintenance and Fabrication Center in Lake Charles was directly impacted by Hurricane Laura in late August 2020. The region was hit by the hurricane which, with high winds, delivered devastating loss of life and property damage to the community. Residents were just recovering from this first hurricane when Hurricane Delta hit in early October, bringing another round of torrential rains across the region. Both hurricanes caused widespread power outages and flooding, which created extensive debris fields.

“While going through a global pandemic, the people of southwest Louisiana faced down two hurricanes and showed us all the meaning of resiliency,” said Michelle Scarpella, vice president and general manager, global sustainment and modernization, Northrop Grumman. “From the start, our focus was on the health and welfare of our people in Lake Charles, followed closely by reopening our site and contributing to the broader community relief efforts.”

Crisis management teams engaged early, with Northrop Grumman’s recovery and response preparation efforts guided by well-documented crisis management and business continuity plans and established protocols. Once all personnel had been accounted for, teams were deployed to assist with employee needs including supplies, insurance coordination, repairs, temporary housing and more, with a focus on timely and targeted outreach and communications.

Concurrently, business resumption teams prioritized site repairs, which included aircraft relocations, to facilitate return to work. The site was able to partially reopen between hurricanes which accelerated recovery after the second hurricane.

“Teams across the company mobilized quickly and the site resumed full operations in under 20 days from Hurricane Delta’s landfall,” said Mary Rose McCaffrey, vice president, security, Northrop Grumman. “This award is truly a testament to the resiliency, compassion and commitment of people and leadership across the company.”

DRI’s Response and Recovery of the Year award recognizes that “the ability to recover from a disaster – whether it was a hardware/software failure, a product recall, a natural disaster, or some other catastrophic event – is the foundation on which business continuity is built. This award recognizes those who have successfully bounced back from a major incident using their plans, skills, and creativity.”

Once operational in 2022, it is expected that the new solar facility will add enough renewable energy to the local grid to match 100 percent of Northrop Grumman’s electricity use in the Commonwealth across its manufacturing and office operations. The solar power generated will also increase the company’s renewable energy sourcing to 10 percent globally by 2022.

“We have a long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions reductions,” said Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president, global corporate responsibility, Northrop Grumman. “As we look beyond our 2020 goals, this project will play an important role in the next generation of our climate-related commitments.”

The facility will diversify Northrop Grumman’s renewable energy portfolio, which also includes on-site solar power systems at the company’s Melbourne and St. Augustine, Florida and Charlottesville, Virginia locations.

“We applaud Northrop Grumman for driving renewable energy use and for being one of the largest manufacturers in the Commonwealth of Virginia to offset its energy consumption in the state with local renewable energy generation,” said Kevin Haley, director, Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, which is an organization that works to streamline and accelerate corporate purchasing of off-site, large-scale renewable energy.

The solar facility, which was developed by Cypress Creek Renewables and will be owned and operated by a Dominion Energy affiliate, is expected to break ground in early 2021, and is projected to generate approximately 140,000 megawatt hours annually, which is the equivalent to powering electricity to more than 11,000 homes. The project will also enable the company to avoid around 49,000 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.

In partnership with Cyber Security Challenge UK, CyberCenturion is a sister programme to the U.S. CyberPatriot competition. It is funded by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and supported by the U.S. Air Force Association.

Two thousand students registered for CyberCenturion VI and teams completed a series of real-life cyber defence tasks in qualifying rounds that began in September 2019. Team members have developed technical abilities as well as professional skills such as teamwork, problem solving, communication and perseverance that employers value.

“Thanks to competitions like CyberCenturion, the next generation is learning skills for the future and being inspired to pursue rewarding careers in cyber security,” said Nick Chaffey, chief executive, Northrop Grumman UK and Europe. “Northrop Grumman’s full involvement in this global STEM education programme across the world helps to build the pipeline of future cyber talent. It is an unrivalled opportunity for young people to learn key cyber skills and engage with industry and cyber professionals.”

Teams competed in two age groups, 12-15 and 15-18 years old, and four categories: all female, all male, mixed and cadet. Top scoring teams from each group and the overall standout top scorers were invited to the live final.

“We’ve now run the competition in the UK for six years, growing from just 50 players in our first year to around 2,000 registrations for CyberCenturion VI,” said Dr Robert Nowill, chairman, Cyber Security Challenge UK. “Through initiatives like CyberCenturion, we’ve introduced more than 8,000 young people to the challenges and rewards of cyber security, broadening the reach of the industry and opening it up to those who may not otherwise be exposed to such valuable extra-curricular experiences.”

Matthew Dawson, a previous CyberCenturion competitor added, "CyberCenturion has had a massive impact on my life. The competition helped cement my ambition of having a career in cyber, as well as enabling me to stand out from the crowd and secure a place at university. I wouldn't be where I am today without it."

“At Northrop Grumman, we are committed to making a difference in the areas where we work and live,” said Martin Kepinski-Kozaczek, program manager and challenge lead, Northrop Grumman. “In the Chesapeake Bay, we’re harnessing the creative power of our workforce and applying it to this conservation challenge.”

Northrop Grumman will create a single, remote-sensing technology system to monitor oyster populations in the Chesapeake Bay. The low-cost system, and training on its operation, will be provided to the CBF to monitor oyster populations and help the foundation reach its goal of adding 10 billion oysters in the Bay by 2025.

Today’s Oyster Monitoring Tech Showcase marked the completion of phase one of the initiative and Northrop Grumman engineers have now determined what sensor technology is best suited to meet monitoring needs going forward. The next phase will see the joint operational testing of system concepts in the Chesapeake Bay, using innovative technology including remote sensing, 3D laser scanning (or Lidar), acoustics, underwater rovers, and sonar. All testing will continue to be done in partnership with CBF.

“We hope this new technology will enable CBF’s scientists and staff to accelerate our work restoring oyster populations in the Bay,” said Will Baker, CBF President. “Oysters are critical to the ecosystem. They filter water and provide habitat to fish, crabs and other marine life. But oyster populations remain at low levels after decades of decline. By combining Northrop Grumman’s technological expertise with CBF’s environmental work, we aim to improve the future for the Bay’s oysters.”

The aircraft was built in 1972 and retired from the company’s Baltimore-based flight test fleet in 2018. But instead of being scrapped, the twin-engine, mid-size jet has been donated to Maryland’s Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) for use as an aviation training aid.

<img align="middle" alt="Northrop Grumman Donates Retired Test Aircraft to Marylands Anne Arundel County Public Schools_1" author="" class="widget-image" custom_size="false" data-imgheight="562" data-imgwidth="750" file_id="5dee9bc02cfac2264804c228" height="562" src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/295/files/201911/5dee9bc02cfac2264804c228_Northrop+Grumman+Donates+Retired+Test+Aircraft+to+Marylands+Anne+Arundel+County+Public+Schools_1/Northrop+Grumman+Donates+Retired+Test+Aircraft+to+Marylands+Anne+Arundel+County+Public+Schools_1_a47fcb33-80e6-4191-b715-93c40dda57d8-prv.jpg" title="Northrop Grumman’s North American/Rockwell Sabreliner N160W (pictured) supported airborne testing of various air-to-air and surface-to-air radars.

The aircraft will now reside at Tipton Airport near Fort Meade to support AACPS’ new Aviation Maintenance Technician program for high school students pursuing formal certification in airframe or power plant maintenance.

“This particular Sabreliner has both historical significance to Northrop Grumman and practical applications as a training aid for AACPS – so its preservation is a win-win for us and the county,” said Jeanie Wade, vice president, operations, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems. “N160W has played a role in every significant Northrop Grumman air-to-air and surface-to-air radar development program for the past 30 years. We’re glad to see AACPS adopt it to train the next generation of aviation technicians.”

Northrop Grumman operated two Sabreliners, which started their careers as former Westinghouse executive transport aircraft before being repurposed as flight test assets. They were part of Northrop Grumman’s fleet of modified commercial aircraft used for hardware and software development.

The white aircraft (N160W) given to AACPS was lightly modified to provide airborne testing support with electronic jamming and countermeasures capability. Being closer to the original Sabreliner configuration, it is well-suited for the role of training aid.

<img align="middle" alt="Northrop Grumman Donates Retired Test Aircraft to Marylands Anne Arundel County Public Schools_2" author="" class="widget-image" custom_size="false" data-imgheight="461" data-imgwidth="750" file_id="5deeb03e2cfac224fc05368c" height="461" src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/cms.ipressroom.com/295/files/201911/201912092036/5deeb03e2cfac224fc05368c_Northrop+Grumman+Donates+Retired+Test+Aircraft+to+Marylands+Anne+Arundel+County+Public+Schools_2/Northrop+Grumman+Donates+Retired+Test+Aircraft+to+Marylands+Anne+Arundel+County+Public+Schools_2_85936f01-3129-40c6-b668-fe375ee44d10-prv.jpg" title="Northrop Grumman Chief Test Pilot Matthew Taylor delivers opening remarks at the Sabreliner Transfer Ceremony at the company’s flight test hangar on Dec. 9, 2019.

The second “Silver Sabreliner” (N168W) was heavily modified to fly F-16 fighter aircraft radars for the U.S. and its allies, from the AN/APG-66/68 up to the new AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar. Distinguishable by its metallic airframe, the aircraft moved to permanent display at the National Electronics Museum in November.

“The aviation industry continues to break barriers in the skies both for military and commercial applications,” said George Arlotto, Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent. “Our students want to be a part of that innovation, we want to help them be a part of it, and our partnership with Northrop Grumman and Tipton Airport is a key part of making that a reality. Our students thrive when we and our partners provide opportunity and access.”

A ceremony marking the transfer of aircraft N160W to AACPS was held on Dec. 9 at the Northrop Grumman flight test facility in Linthicum, Maryland. The two Sabreliners had been a common sight in the sky over Maryland until their retirement, but the baton has now passed to a newer fleet of test bed aircraft now supporting Northrop Grumman’s radar development work.

Jamie Kent, Box Elder High School’s principal, opened the conference with a keynote address to the students. “This is an exciting time to be in a STEM field; there is so much to discover and create, but the world needs perspectives and ideas from both men and women,” Kent said.

The workshops spanned a variety of fun, hands-on activities, including learning what it takes to be a doctor, rocket scientist, chemist, engineer, computer programmer and more.

Over the past 19 years, more than 7,000 girls have attended the Northrop Grumman-sponsored conference. Many have chosen to pursue college degrees in STEM, and some have even come back to EYH to serve as workshop presenters.

“This is an amazing event to help empower girls by showing them the variety of opportunities STEM can provide. Knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math only opens up more doors,” said Jessica Widrick, this year’s chairperson and principal structural engineer, propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman. “STEM careers are attainable for all, which is what these girls get to see at EYH; women who love, enjoy, or have careers in STEM-related fields.”

Northrop Grumman partnered with MiraCosta College and Palomar College for the pilot phase of the new program during school year 2019-2020 and is exploring additional partnerships through the San Diego & Imperial Counties Community College Association (SDICCCA) for school year 2020-2021.

“Establishing a framework to collaborate with education systems is necessary for building a strong local talent pipeline and supports a long-term workforce planning strategy,” said Alfredo Ramirez, vice president, engineering, Northrop Grumman. “Our decision to develop a community college pilot fills a critical gap bridging K-12 and university programming, allowing us to reach and engage students in San Diego throughout their education journey.”

A small cohort of students from MiraCosta and Palomar colleges were selected for the fall 2019 semester through an application and interview process. These students are now part-time engineering assistants and technicians and will earn credit at their respective colleges while gaining valuable career experience in systems integration and test, software engineering and electronics and payloads at Northrop Grumman’s San Diego Autonomous Design Center of Excellence located in San Diego.

“MiraCosta College serves a diverse student population including a large veteran community. Northrop Grumman’s pilot program gives us the ability to provide our students with empowering industry-based experiences that will help them define and shape their future,” said Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke, superintendent and president of MiraCosta College.

Dr. Joi Lin Blake, superintendent and president of the Palomar Community College District, Palomar College, adds, “Palomar College is a Hispanic Serving Institution and the opportunity for two of our Latinx students to engage in work-based learning where they can earn a competitive wage and be mentored by Northrop Grumman’s best and brightest engineers is a win-win.”

Northrop Grumman’s involvement with San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Inclusive Growth Steering Committee inspired its shared commitment to contribute to the regional goal of 20,000 new jobs by 2030. The pilot program also supports the Advancing San Diego initiative which aims to cultivate a more inclusive economy, as we look inward to address regional talent shortages by strengthening the relationship between business and education systems.

“Northrop Grumman’s commitment to providing a pathway to qualification for students in San Diego contributes to a thriving, diverse and innovation-driven economy that lifts under-served communities and maintains the region’s continued competitiveness,” said Mark Cafferty, president and CEO, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation.
