This is the 11th year the company has published a corporate responsibility report.

The Index measures key performance indicators across organizational culture, leadership, accessibility, employment, community engagement, support services and supplier diversity.

Northrop Grumman received the Employer of the Year: Inspire Award for being a top employer for advancing its disability inclusion journey and strategies and practices that have produced measurable success in many areas. The award recognized the leadership of Wes Bush, Northrop Grumman chairman and chief executive officer and the company’s self-identification campaign launched in 2014, the centralized workplace accommodations online request portal and the case management system program started in 2015.

In the 2017 DEI ranking, the company’s Victory Over Impairment and Challenge Enterprise (VOICE) employee resource group was recognized with a Disability:IN leadership award as the program which most exemplifies strategies and initiatives that have resulted in measurable results in the area of disability inclusion in the workplace. Northrop Grumman’s VOICE organization strives to develop a sense of community and empowerment among individuals with disabilities (both apparent and non-apparent), advocates and employees with family members with a disability.

“The incredible transformation of the Lakeland Community & STEAM Center will provide a resource for people of all ages to acquire life-changing knowledge and skills. Large-scale, positive changes like these usually require a strong group of partners standing shoulder-to-shoulder, and this transformation would not have occurred without the Northrop Grumman Foundation, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore City Parks and Recreation, and donors like the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and South Baltimore Gateway Partnership all working together. Their efforts are to be strongly applauded and hopefully replicated in other communities throughout our city and state.”

Like all EarthEcho Expeditions, Expedition: Plastic Seas leverages the rich Cousteau legacy of exploration and discovery to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education alive for today’s teachers. Selected teachers, known as Expedition Fellows, will leave this experience with classroom materials developed to inspire students to engage with engineering design around one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Interested teachers can find more information on how to apply here: http://earthecho.org/expeditions. The application deadline is May 18, 2018, and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the deadline.

During Oct. 1-5, 2018 the selected Expedition Fellows join scientists and engineers to learn more about the consequences of coastal development and human pollution, particularly plastics, along Australia’s southern coast, with a focus on the ecosystems of Port Philip Bay.

Expedition Fellows participate in on-site environmental remediation activities that they then translate into adventure-based STEM learning modules guided by EarthEcho International staff and partners. These modules introduce students to innovative solutions that address pollution, including plastic trash in marine environments while challenging youth to develop their own solutions. During 2019, digital versions of the modules created by the Expedition Fellows will be provided online to classrooms across the world at no cost.

“EarthEcho Expeditions provide educators with a firsthand opportunity to experience environmental issues and meet the people who are developing solutions to solve them. Our focus with each expedition is to create place-based educational experiences that can be accessed globally through the work of our Expedition Fellows,” said Philippe Cousteau, Jr., founder of EarthEcho International. “Australia is home to some of our most important and endangered natural wonders. We are excited to partner with the Northrop Grumman Foundation on this year’s expedition to examine groundbreaking ways to protect these treasures and the people and communities who depend on them.”

“Northrop Grumman is thrilled to continue our support of EarthEcho International for a second year,” said Sandra Evers-Manly, president of the Northrop Grumman Foundation and Northrop Grumman vice president of global corporate responsibility. “We look forward to working with educators in Australia to spark enthusiasm of STEM concepts and the environment in their students.”

Last year’s EarthEcho Expedition: Water by Design, brought 26 middle school teachers to Southern California for an exploration of water scarcity. Learning modules produced in that Expedition examined aquaponics, ocean desalination, groundwater replenishment, precision irrigation and water transport. STEM career videos featuring leading scientists and engineers from Northrop Grumman, NASA, Future Foods Farms, and municipal water districts gave students insight into STEM and environmental sustainability careers.

The 10 finalists were among teams from across the U.K. and Overseas Territories who competed in a series of intense qualifying rounds which took place during the last six months, to reach the finals. The competition scenario in the finals required the teams to adopt the persona of security experts working for a fictional gaming association that has been tasked with helping to secure the gaming industry after a spate of cyber security attacks. Competitors used their cyber security skills to identify vulnerabilities in the networks, make critical patches and defend the system against attacks.

Now in its fourth consecutive year, CyberCenturion is the U.K.'s first team-based cyber security contest specifically designed to attract 12-18 year olds. The competition aims to engage and inspire talented young people with an interest in cyber as a way to address the national skills gap in STEM subjects and encourage careers in cyber security.

CyberCenturion is the U.K. version of the proven CyberPatriot competition, part of a major U.S. national youth cyber STEM education programme presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and created by the AFA. It is part of the company's commitment to promoting STEM education and to helping build the U.K.'s pool of diverse talent in cyber security. The CyberPatriot competition in the U.S. has already engaged more than 300,000 children, educating them on the opportunities in cyber security across the U.S. Eighty percent of those who have taken part in CyberPatriot now plan to pursue a higher education course in cyber or STEM.

The competition is one of many initiatives led by Northrop Grumman to help identify the best young cyber talent. Northrop Grumman is addressing the cyber talent issue around the world and in addition to CyberCenturion in Europe and CyberPatriot in the U.S., the company now also has CyberArabia in the Middle East.

The AFA is a nonprofit, independent, professional military and aerospace education association.

Cyber Security Challenge U.K. is a nationwide programme aimed at bringing more talented people into the cyber security profession and build a bigger U.K. cyber talent pool to help address the skills shortage that affects government bodies, businesses and citizens alike.

EarthEcho Expedition: Water by Design Expedition Fellows will explore a broad range of water-related issues and solutions including the following:

Exploration of the water supply that provides water for the more than 10 million Los Angeles county residents with the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power

Examination of the innovative technology used to predict water resource availability with NASA’s Airborne Snow Observatory and Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Understanding the process of desalinization at the West Basin Water Education Center to explore how to safely and effectively use ocean water to supplement the regional water supply

Visiting one of the largest aquaponics farms in the U.S. to understand how this innovative farming practice can reduce water resource consumption.

Selected from hundreds of submissions nationwide, the EarthEcho Expedition: Water by Design Expedition Fellows bring diverse experiences and a passion for sharing STEM learning with their students. A full list of the 2017 Fellows and the schools they represent can be found at the end of this press release.
The third annual cyber security workshop and competition, CyberArabia, to be held Oct. 11-12, 2017, is part of the company’s global commitment to cyber education and workforce development, and will include a cyber defense competition that recognizes winners on both the men’s and women’s campuses across Saudi universities.

Walid Abukhaled, chief executive, Northrop Grumman Middle East, said, “We are delighted to partner with King Saud University for the third consecutive year to host the CyberArabia competition. Each year we witness outstanding and talented students, men and women alike, from across the Kingdom come together to put their skills to the test. While the competition is fun, the importance of building cyber skills is quite serious and important to the Kingdom.”

Commenting on their collaboration Dr. Jalal Al-Muhtadi, director, Center of Excellence in Information Assurance, King Saud University said, “It is an honor to host the CyberArabia competition. Events such as this help to build a foundation among the students in the field of engineering and technology and create awareness about cyber security and the serious threats posed by cyber attacks.”

Following the hands-on workshop portion of CyberArabia, the competition challenges students to find and eradicate cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual images of common operating systems. Not only are the students challenged to put their cyber skills to the test, they must do so in a limited time.
Northrop Grumman will be screening "Into the Unkown" in Norway, a film describing the construction of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope

The film, developed by the Northrop Grumman Foundation as a resource for teachers, students and space enthusiasts, is the story of building NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the revolutionary scientific successor to the Hubble space telescope. Featuring dynamic scenes of construction, conversations with scientists and engineers, and stunning visuals, Into the Unknown provides an in-depth look at one of the most daring scientific missions ever attempted.

The film will be screened during the third week of October at different science centres and museums in Oslo, Sarpsborg, Trondheim, Bodø and Andøya. Students and teachers from selected schools, as well as others, will view the film and have a chance to speak to scientists and engineers from NASA and Northrop Grumman. They will share how NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will become the premier space observatory for astronomers worldwide, extending the discoveries of the Hubble telescope and pushing the boundaries of what is capable for spacecraft.

“Into the Unknown gives a fascinating insight into innovative technologies, engineering and science behind the largest space telescope to launch, and its role in looking for the first stars and galaxies that were created,” says Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president, global corporate responsibility, Northrop Grumman, and president, the Northrop Grumman Foundation. “We hope the film will inspire and encourage students to pursue academic studies and careers in STEM, and strive to become the next generation of space scientists.”

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is made up of four major components — the telescope, the integrated science instrument module, the spacecraft, and the sunshield. Northrop Grumman is under contract from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for the design and development of the telescope’s optics, sunshield, and spacecraft. The Mid-Infrared Instrument, one of the key science instruments onboard, was designed, built and tested in the U.K.

Due for launch in spring 2019, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful infrared space telescope ever built and will observe the most distant objects in the universe, provide images of the first galaxies formed, and study unexplored planets around distant stars. The James Webb Space Telescope is a joint project of NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency.

Northrop Grumman and the Northrop Grumman Foundation are committed to expanding and enhancing the pipeline of diverse, talented STEM students globally.
